Mediumship and Beyond

Some of you may be forgiven for thinking that the psychic on the platform at your local spiritualist church, or hall, is an actor or actress.  Sadly this comes with the territory.  Some are just that, or at least use a bit of that.

You sit in your chair hoping that the medium speaking today will come to you and pass on a message from your loved ones in the spirit world.  One to make you believe that they are still watching over you.  You really want to believe there is life after death and a message would help you to make up your mind.

You expect the subject to be taken seriously, if not by the general public, then at least by the spiritualists.  Most spiritualists do take proving life after death very seriously.  That does not mean that they cannot be happy, or laugh and smile whilst they give proof.  There are some who can give proof whilst still being entertaining and amusing, without acting.

What you do not expect, is for the person on ‘stage’ to behave in an unseemly manner and appearing to put on some sort of act.  This though is sadly sometimes what you get.

Sometimes, though not all times by any means, the medium on the platform will affect a stance that is not their usual.  This may take the form of implying that spirit are making them behave oddly.  Some will affect a limp or hold their hand and arm at a funny angle and say that their guide has a disability.  Their guide may well have had a disability whilst on the earth plain but certainly not in the spirit world.  They have no physical body once they have passed over.

Use your own intelligence here.  If it seems to you that a spirit would not make a medium look foolish by ‘making’ them hold their body in an odd way, then do not accept it.

You have to understand that spirits do not have physical bodies.  Therefore, they cannot possibly make any able bodied physical person do anything with their body.  It is purely showmanship.

Shockingly for me, I have witnessed the leader of an open circle behaving as if drunk.  She was falling around, swaying and flinging her arms about, whilst saying that the spirit who was coming through was forcing drink down her.  She insisted that the spirit was drunk and now she was drunk too because the spirit was giving her whiskey.  What a load of codswallop!  Whiskey in the spirit world!

You must always use your own intelligence to help you realise when you are being had.  Some do this on purpose and it is obvious as it is a regular occurrence.  Others are deluded into thinking they have to affect these positions.  What utter nonsense!

Spirit would never, ever make a medium look foolish.  The only person who can do that is the supposed ‘psychic’.  Please be discerning.  You should be able to spot when showmanship is happening if you just use common sense.

When you hear the crowds coming out of church or the theatre, saying things like ‘Oh what a laugh, wasn’t it good’.  Ask yourself was it music hall type good or was there really good evidence of survival of the spirit.  Remember, laughter can, and often does, go hand in hand with spirit work.  This is acceptable.  Showmanship is not.

There are many times when I am feeling low or unhappy, that I find it comforting to feel the presence of a spirit loved one.

It may be just a brush against my cheek or a tickling of my hair, but it is enough to bring a smile to my face and a warmth in my heart.  I feel at peace, and I know which loved ones they are by the way they make themselves felt.

A particular loved one strokes my cheek and another caresses my brow.  It is not the same sensation as a human touch, more of a sense of it.  It is enough though, when you have learned to tune in to your sixth sense.

Too often we get bogged down with day to day trivia and become depressed by life’s problems.  We are not always aware that spirit have moved in close to comfort us.  The feelings we have often swamp us and make it impossible for others to get close. When you are truly sad, that is when they come the closest, but it can also be the time when we use our senses the least.

Persevere and you will be rewarded. When you feel most alone, that is when you are most guarded and guided. You can be confident that your Guardian Angel will be there to comfort and guide you.

When you feel a presence, ask who it is (in your head). You may not get an answer there and then, but you will find out who it is if you are patient. You can try a system of elimination, this often works well.

Terms You Should Know Before You Develop Your Psychic Ability

Although I am sure you are very keen to start, before you go any further, it may be useful to familiarise yourself with some of the terms used by mediums, psychics, and Spiritualists.

Aura:An aura is something we all have, and this is backed up by scientific evidence. It once was questionable, as Auras are usually invisible to the naked eye, but with the invention of Kirlian photography, which catches the aura on film, it is now proven. The aura is fact not fiction. The aura is made up of colours and surrounds the body in a sort of egg shape.

The average person does not see it, but a psychic can learn how to see it with practise. The colours shimmer, pulsate and change according to how the body and mind is reacting to outside influences. Some mediums can also read auras. They can tell you a lot about what is going on in and around your life, by studying your aura and its colours. Objects too have auras.

Circle or Psychic Circle:A circle is made when a group of people get together to practise their psychic and mediumistic skills. A group often work best when sitting in a circle, as each person can be seen by all, making communication between each other much easier. Anyone can attend an open circle at a Spiritualist church; it is a good place to learn more about psychics and mediumship and improve ones abilities.

Clairaudience (clear hearing): Some mediums have the gift of hearing voices or words within the head, that cannot be heard by the psychically undeveloped person. Again, it can be used by the medium when developed to a high degree, in order to pass information on to a sitter, from the spirit entities and loved ones on the higher side of life. It can be a bit like being a switchboard operator.

Clairsentience (clear sensing): This is another psychic gift used by mediums. It allows the medium to sense or feel things, including pain and emotion, which are communicated from loved ones in the spirit world.

Clairvoyance (clear seeing): The ability to see images, pictures, and even spirits with the third eye: a place in the centre of the brow that is invisible to the naked eye. When the third eye is well developed the medium can utilise it to help give proof of life after death.

Development Circle: In a development circle one learns how to develop psychic awareness. Such circles are usually held at a Spiritualist church, but can be held at a private home by an experienced medium. It is not advisable to attend another development circle whilst you are learning to develop elsewhere.

Spiritual tutors have defined their own ways of developing and sometimes they are incompatible with others, and this would only cause confusion. That said, it is okay to attend Spiritualist open circles and practise your skills, as there is no teaching happening when the circle is open to all. So, as long as you learn the rules of opening and closing, as explained later, the open circle can be a good experience.

Life After Death: When we human beings die, our body is no longer needed, hence the need for burial or cremation, but our spirit or soul moves on to the spirit world to carry on its intended existence. This process is often referred to as Transition, but in fact it is our life after this life. Once transition has taken place, the spirit carries on with its progression  and evolvement to a higher spiritual plane.

Medium:A medium, is someone who has developed their own psychic ability to such a degree that they have become aware of an ability to communicate with spirit entities and loved ones who have passed over to the spirit world. Mediumship is not an inherent gift, though it is possible to develop dormant skills.

Private Sitting: If a person wishes to receive a one-to-one message from a medium, they can book a private sitting. This can of course be free of charge, but most often there is a fee. We all have to live and finance our homes and offices, and mediums are no exception, so most have to charge. Not many people will or are able, to work for nothing.

At such a private sitting, you would expect to be given proof of life after death. This would involve being given evidence from a loved one of yours who has passed to the higher side of life. Information not previously known to the medium. This should prove that your loved ones were here on the earth plane and are still watching over you even now.

Psychic: A psychic is someone who uses senses that the average person is unaware of. We all have these psychic senses which are invisible, but which can be develop to a high degree with time and effort. Smell, taste, touch, sight, and hearing, are all physical senses of which we are all aware because we see evidence of them all the time, and indeed take them for granted. Unless you are a Spiritualist, or mix with those who use the psychic senses, you are probably unaware of them.

Psychometry: A sitter gives you a personal item to hold in order for you to give information about the past of the object and its owner. All things hold vibrations or data which has been left on them over time. Pure silk is the only item I know of that holds no vibrations, hence the reason Tarot readers keep their cards wrapped in it.

The reader holds the item and lets their psychic centres take in as much information as possible. It is a bit like being a sponge and soaking up the vibrations and then relating them to the sitter.

Psychic Art:A psychic artist is someone who has the gift of being able to see a spirit entity and draw them, usually at the same time as giving clairvoyance. Sometimes, a second medium is in attendance to add to the clairvoyance.

A famous Psychic Artist was the late Coral Polge, who was a well respected Spiritualist. Coral, did drawings which were said to be very accurate and the clairvoyant proof she added made the sitting more than interesting.

Sitter: A sitter is someone who ‘sits’ with a medium or psychic, either in a circle or privately, in order to receive a ‘message’ or reading from them.

Spiritualist Closed Circle: A closed circle is just for those invited along, private. It is usually open only to church members.

Spiritualist Open Circle: An open circle is usually held at a Spiritualist Church. People sit in a circle with others who are hoping to communicate with someone in the spirit world. You may get a message from an experienced person or from a novice. You could also go to such a circle to practise your own newly developed psychic gifts.

Transition: Our ‘death’ is just a transitory phase from this life to the next, it is in fact a continuation of our existence. We have come from the spirit world, it is our home, and at our earthly death we return to the spirit world. Taking our transition is almost like passing through a door into another dimension. Only a thought away.

Vibrations: Are what he psychic or medium ‘reads’ when one has a sitting. Such vibrations can contain information about the sitter, and their life.

Table tapping is a phenomena which can be either psychic or a physical mediumship gift.  It is easy to see the difference.  One gives little information and the other gives exact, meaningful information.

Firstly, the psychic table tapping uses the energy of the people using it.  The table can start to move and also taps out a message. The problem here is that if the people using it are not honest, they may push the table or create what appears to be a message. I have witnessed this first hand.

There is a problem too when eager sitters try to pre-empt what the table is ‘saying’.  It may tap out  two letters, such as El and they assume it is Elvis, when it is actually trying to tap out Elsie.  The table gets ‘confused’ , (honestly it can). Therefore, in this case, its a waste of time.

If you have genuine people using the table then it is quite different. The table may start to move quite a lot as though it wants to move across the room. It may well move round the room.  The tapping may start to give yes and no answers. Once an alphabet is sorted then so are the messages. I know people who do this and it is quite an experience, but they are very honest.

For the table to work mediumistically, therefore physically, it needs a physical medium. The medium has to have sat in a closed circle for sometime to develop enough for ectoplasm to be used by spirits.

Spirits will use the ectoplasm to make ectoplasmic rods, which in turn can uses the table to full effect. This is a wonderful experience and one which needs to be seen to believe.  I have experienced this and it is so much different than the psychic energy experience.

There is always a tapping out of the alphabet so that the spirit can bring through lots of information. Someone has to take notes so that nothing is misunderstood.  This can produce startling messages which of course are very accurate, as it is direct from spirit.

If you have experienced any of this please write and tell me. Sharing is the way to teach people the subject.  There is not a lot of tapping tapping around as there used to be. It can be quite laborious.  But it is worth it when it is done correctly. After all it is psychic phenomena, which ever way it is used.

Today’s trance mediums leave a lot to be desired.  In my opinion, there is not enough development in this area.  Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

Again, like I have said many times, you must develop these gifts. They do not just happen. You need to be an experienced medium, willing to sit regularly. We do not know it all. No one does.

I have seen so called trance mediums pulling strange faces and speaking in funny voices. This is not trance.  Trance mediums faces are not changed by spirit and the voice certainly is not touched. Trance is not a physical gift. It is just an altered state. We all can learn to train ourselves to go into an altered state which helps the clairvoyance to be clearer and more accurate. This is not a physical gift.

There is not enough knowledge at the average church, and you may need to go further afield in order to investigate other gifts. There are lots of spiritual courses you can attend to widen your knowledge. Your church may be wonderful, but it cannot teach you everything.  You need lots of experience and knowledge before you attempt to use gifts of a higher nature.  You should see more demonstrations and learn all about it.

Physical gifts are more complicated than trance.  Spirit work very close with the medium and ectoplasm is used to give direct voice. Mediums often sit every night in order to develop the link with their spirit guide, enough for higher work. It needs to be a very close relationship. Not one which develops over a short time. You must get to know each other and become as one.

Trance is  simpler to develop than physical mediumship, but you must learn to be true to yourself. A lot of mediums kid themself into thinking that they are in trance when actually they are just being over shadowed. The medium must dedicate themselves  to development in order to use trance correctly.

The proof of trance comes in the philosophy which spirit are trying to bring through. The medium should not falter with their speech as spirit brings the inspiration. The knowledge which comes through is often beyond the mediums knowledge and expeience.  Likewise, if the trance medium is bringing messages of proof, it will be accurate information as it is coming direct from spirit. All the information should be accurate or why bother with trance at all. You amy as well use clairvoyance.

If the medium falters, then it is unlikely that they are in true trance. They may think they are. That is where more experienced mediums and teachers of trance are needed. The medium has to learn the difference between trance and clairvoyance.

Think about this. Why should spirit go to all the trouble of working with you in trance, if the same information can come with clairvoyance? There would be no point. Except for a more theatrical event.

Physical mediumship involves the use of ectoplasm taken from the medium’s body via any orifice.

Physical mediums spend years of dedicated ‘sitting’ for spirit.  In other words they sit within a circle, usually a private one, at least one day per week every week for years, in order to build up their relationship with the spirit guides.  Whilst building up this relationship they also develop the ectoplasm.  This is not the medium’s choice but the choice of the spirit world.  The medium though has to show their dedication by being a faithful sitter and proving themselves worthy.

There are not as many physical mediums around now as there used to be in say the Victorian era.  People nowadays are far too busy with their material life to dedicate themselves as much as is needed.  It is a sad fact that working for spirit is not financially rewarding and therefore most people cannot afford the necessary time.

There are several gifts a  medium can develop.  One is Trance. This is where the medium goes into a deep trance and with the help of their spirit guide they allow others to communicate through them.  This is often used for philosophy in church and private circles but can also be used to bring forth evidence of survival.

Physical gifts are different. Transfiguration is a physical gift.  This is different from trance, which is not physical.  The medium goes into a deep trance as above, but this time it appears as though their face and sometimes hands etc begin to change. The medium appears to have someone else’s features and is often recognised by a sitter.  A red light is usually shone onto the mediums face so that the features show up.  The rest of the room is usually kept in darkness.

Direct voice is, I think, the most coveted of all physical mediumship gifts.  It is the one, given the choice, that I would choose to have.  This is because the medium’s voice box is used by the spirit, so that their (the spirit’s) voice is the one that is heard and recognised by the sitters.

What greater proof of life after death than to hear directly the voice of a dead loved one!  What a wonderful gift!

The medium has to use a ‘cabinet’  in which to sit and harness the ectoplasm,  so that the spirits can use it to form the visions or voices.  And, in the case of the table phenomena,  the ectoplasmic rods  move the table and tap out messages.  This is very different to the psychic use of the table tappings. That only uses the pschic energy of the sitters. It is not a physical event.

It was last week that I ran my Graphology workshop for our Swiss guests. And this week I gave some of them private readings.  The event was run and organised by Pat Campbell, a well know international medium who lives in Sheffild.

The Swiss  mostly spoke in German, which meant we  had to have an interpreter. This was a new thing for myself. But I found it thoroughly enjoyable.

The guests threw themselves into the workshop with enthusiasm and gusto.  We had a lovely day and it was really nice getting to know them all.

The readings I gave were warmly appreciated,  particularly by one lady in particular, Emmie.  Emmie said that she had been waiting for particular evidence for a long time. She had been going from medium to medium in the hope of getting the proof .  Emmie told me that I was the only medium who had been able to give her that proof.  She was beside herself with happiness.

The Swiss party were leaving Sheffield for home this morning. So yesterday evening we all went out together for dinner and drinks. We had a wonderful time.

I have so much enjoyed my participation in their week of workshops. I am sure they will all turn out to be good mediums and the language will never be a problem for them.  Graphology is not of course a psychic tool but we used our psychic ability to make it different and to give them as much practice as possible.

If they enjoyed it as much as I did, they will have gone home very happy and looking forward to coming over again.

When a loved one has passed over to the spirit world, I know all you want to do is feel them, and hold them, and talk to them just as before.  It is no longer possible to feel their physical presence or see their physical body but it is still possible to communicate with them albeit through another person.

You may be able to learn to do this yourself with practice, or you may find out that you can do it already.  If not, then you can still get communication from them via a good medium.  You can do this by going to see one privately, on the recommendation of a trusted friend or relative.  Otherwise, you could go along to a meeting at a spiritualist church or hall where a medium is demonstrating clairvoyance.

If you plump for the private consultation, then you are more likely to get a longer reading.  This reading may or may not include a message from your recently ‘lost’ loved one.  Sometimes when loved ones first pass over they are unable to communicate.  It may take them a while to adjust to their new circumstances before they are ready to get in touch.

If it is not possible for the recently passed over loved to communicate themselves, they may pass communication to you via another spirit personality.  It all depends how much evolved the spirit was before it’s earthly existence.  Some already know how to communicate and therefore they get in touch pretty quickly.  If they had no experience, they will have to learn, much the same as we have to learn here.  Therefore, you may have to wait a while.

When you go for a consult, it is no good asking for just the one person to come through, as you cannot call up any spirit.  You have to ask for communication and then wait and see who comes through.  In my experience, it is best not to get into any conversation with the medium before your reading.  Wait until afterwards to ask any questions and before divulging any information.

Any medium worth their salt would not ask you any questions.  It would get in the way.  A medium has to keep a clear head and so anything you talk about is a hindrance.  Just say yes, no, or, I do not know what you mean, in answer to anything the medium says.  It is best for all three of you, you, the medium, and the spirit entity in the long run.

If you choose not to go for the private reading then you could go along to a meeting and the medium may come to you and pass on the communication from spirit.  Again, do not feed the medium, just keep your responses short and to the point as I have suggested above.

I am not suggesting that you live in the past, nor that you replace the living with the dead, Neither do I suggest that you don’t move on with your life.  What I am suggesting, is that you come to a realisation that we are all spirit and that as spirit we can all communicate with each other, albeit in a different way than on the earth plain.

We all are SPIRIT and came here to this earthly life, from our home in the Spirit World, to learn the lessons that only human life could teach us, in order to facilitate our eternal evolution.  When our lessons are learned and our time is up, we go back home. However long or however short the earthly time.  We have no say in that.

Remember, there is no beginning and no end to communication, or to life.  Life is everlasting.

I have been asked if it is spirits who tickle your face when in a spirit circle or church. I gather the person asking has had this experience.

When we sit for spirit, we build up an energy. This energy is what we use to work with spirit. Sometimes this energy can be felt. It may feel like you are being gently tickled. It sometimes feels as though your hair is being lightly touched. It is often described as a cobweb feeling.  This is the energy as gets stronger in order for us to work.

Sometimes though, we ask our spirit guides for proof of who they are. Or we might ask a spirit loved one to let us know it is them, or that they are around us.  The you may feel their response as a soft tickling sensation.

When my grandma comes through she strokes my cheek and when my sister comes around she strokes the other cheek. One of my guides seems to stroke my hair. But I always ask them who it is for proof.

When I sit in the power, the energy builds up so much that I can feel it very strongly. It is intense and brings along other feelings with it.  I know from experience exactly what it is and the difference between the two.power

Try experimenting with the feelings and ask questions of spirit.  If you are new to it all then you can just ask for it to go away. It usually does. If you feel it often, then it may be time for you to develop, or develop more.
