Mediumship and Beyond

I have been asked if developing your mediumship can make you feel ill.  There is no short answer. It all depends if you go about it in the right manner and if you are guided by a mentor with lots of experience.

When I first sat for development, I did not know what to expect. The medium running the group had this notion that she should tell us nothing of what to expect in case it preempted our experiences. This I believe to have been the wrong thing to do.

As week by week I sat in the circle, obliviously building up the energy to work with. I did not know what this energy was nor how to use it. Or even that I could use it. I was so naive. This caused me to have a bad head every weekend after the development group.

I now know that the energy built up has to be used up. If not it can give you a headache and cause you to feel unweel.  I make sure this does not happen to my students. I get them to use up the energy at the end of each class by sending it out as healing.

I als0  know that if you are sitting for trance or any other spiritual and mediumistic gift, it is important you use up all the energy you build up or you may feel ill.

Other than that, mediumship does not in itself make you feel ill.  As long as you know what you are doing and that you are looked after by your mentor, you will be fine.

Communicating with spirits does not make you feel ill either. Although, clairsentience can help you feel the sense of pain that a spirit passed over with. But only the sense of it. Not the actual physical pain.

The gift of mediumship is a natural gift and used properly it works well. As with all things in life, abusing your gift may have implications which make you feel ill. Mostly that of guilt.

I truly believe that we do not, and cannot, disturb spirits by communicating with them. The reason is that we cannot summon up spirits. We can only tune in and ask ‘Is there anybody there?’ We cannot make them communicate.

A lot of the older mediums used to give the impression that they could call up any spirit that they wanted to speak to.  Especially if the spirit was that of a famous celebrity.  Some old books by mediums implied very strongly that they regularly communicated with the famous.

This has given the wrong impression of what mediums can and cannot do. We are only human, not supernatural and can only communicate with those who choose to come through.

Spirits tend to come through to communicate via a medium, to a person who is in the same room as the medium.  They come through to bring love and upliftment, as well as proof of life after death. They bring this information for their own loved ones. So, unless your very own loved one is a celebrity, you are unlikely to be able to communicate with one.

There is no reason why Elvis, Princess Diana, Mother Teresa or any other famous person would want to communicate to a total stranger. They have more to do. Their spirit is evolving and talking to you will not help at all.

So you see, you are not disturbing spirits by communicating with them. They will only come if they want to. You cannot make any spirit communicate unless they want to. Spirit will only come if invited  and if they want to communicate with you via a medium or otherwise.

It is fairly often that I get told stories of things going bump in the night.  It might be noises in the house when it is dark. It might be things that are moved around or switched on. Whatever it is always makes the residents nervous.

Sometimes a spirit loved one may be trying to catch the attention of someone.  They may try to move objects or make noises to do this.  Sometimes they can makes lights flicker or turn them off. Maybe you have one who turns on taps or moves specific objects that they know you will notice.

It is always the loud noises that scare people the most. Especially when it is dark. You try to convince yourself that its just the old house settling!  Or maybe a huge draught of air has knocked something over. But when you have checked everything out, you may not be so sure.

If you think it is a loved spirit then you can ask questions and tell them to give you a sign that it is really them.  You may be happy to have them around. After all they can do you no harm and you may find it sort of comforting.  You may like to enlist the help of a medium to try to communicate with the spirit, to find out just who they really are.

But what if its none of these? What if you keep hearing noises in the night? What if taps are turning on? What if you hear whispering?  What if someone is playing around with your electrical items?  Maybe your home has a spirit that you dont know anything about? Is your radio turning on and off as if by its own accord?

Strangely, as I am writing this, I am hearing taps on my wall. Definite tapping. In fact two definite knocks!!!  I offered up ‘Bless you’, but I have had no other response yet. Someone knows what I am writing about!!!  It is not night time and the sun is streaming in,  so no need to feel its scary. But there is someone here with me now, I am certain of this.

Your spirit may just be someone who belongs to the house or even to the ground on which your house is built. If your house is not old, or if you are the only family who ever lived in it, it may be that a more ancient building was on the site where you now live.  Maybe the spirit who is going bump in the night or rapping on your wall is actually from another time. Some place in history.

You can always investigate and find out what was there before you and your home. It may be that a very old spirit is trying to contact you.  Do some detective work and see what you can find out.  You may be very surprised and may find it very rewarding.

Spirits don’t torment us for fun you know. If they are trying to communicate, then it is always for a good reason and a purpose.  I am hearing another tap on my wall. There is nobody else here but me. I think someone is reading over my shoulder!!!  I know I have a vistor but then I am used to spirits.

If you have read previous posts, you will now understand more about what to expect from a private consultation with a genuine medium.

Of note is the difference between the medium’s message and the cold readers efforts.  A medium has to give lots of unique evidence.  It has to be a collection of things which the sitter and their family can uniquely place with their spirit loved one.

Generalisations such as ‘a man who had a heart attack’ or ‘a woman who had trouble with her legs’, do not constitute, in themselves, proof of anything.  If you give unique proof and also include the man and woman, then it is good. All the information given has to come together to build up the jigsaw puzzle.

Cold readers cannot possibly match this unique evidence and you need to be aware of this if you decide to have a private reading.

Look upon a sitting as being told a story. A story that, when it all comes together,  only fits you, your family, and your friends as a whole. Some others may be able to take parts of the message, as with the above mentioned man and woman, but only you should be able to understand the full story.

We all know a John and a David, so too a Gill and a Carol. We all know of someone who passed with a heart attack or a lung disease.  But put these into your unique set of circumstances and it makes all the difference.

If the John passed with lung disease and you are told he also lived on a farm and was connected to Mary, who just happens to be your mother, then this is unique to you. These are not details which a cold reader would come up with, nor indeed a psychic reader.

What makes the medium’s message so special is that the information comes from spirits and the spirit world; from your loved ones who have crossed over. They lived in your unique life and therefore know all about your circumstances. This also makes them able to offer advice on your current problems.

If you are looking for proof of survival of the spirit, a medium is what you need. Choose with care.

It is far too easy for anyone to jump onto the psychic bandwagon. Cold readers and people readers, and the plain ‘I can do that’  folk. The country is full of them. Sadly, so are our churches. There seems to be much of it around.

You need to be very careful about who you trust and who you go to for your psychic and mediumistic readings. It is so easy to be conned out of your hard earned money. Choose wisely and get help from those in the know. Only go to mediums who are recommended to you by someone who you can trust. Ask about the reading content and see if it is what you need.

Be careful too about what you are hoping for when you have a reading. Don’t expect your fortune to be told.  Mediums are NOT fortune tellers. Mediums are here  to give help and upliftment, along with proof of life after death. Those who say they can read your future are less than honest. Those who cannot give proof of life after death are not mediums.

The other thing that is worrying, is the fact that so many people with little or no experience, are running groups and appearing on platforms at Spiritualist churches. Although this has been going on for years, there is more of it now. People step out of the development group after a short time and think they know it all. Then they are urged to get up on the platform when the church is short of a speaker.

If you are thinking of joining a church group, particularly development groups, ask about the leader of the circle, and find out just how much experience they have. Do they have enough knowledge to answer your questions and are they capable of helping if you are having trouble.

People should not be teaching others if they lack the expert knowledge. Whatever the subject.  If they don’t know how to help themselves how can they help others. Would you ask a maths teacher to teach you about Art?  Or a mechanic to perform surgery?  So why ask a inexperienced person to teach you how to develop mediumship?

With the best will in the world, no one can teach what they don’t understand. So maybe those who aren’t ready to run groups can help out at running the church and things in the background. Until they have the experience and the expert knowledge. Then they can develop at their own pace without feeling the need to hurry.

Standing up and working in the open circle is simple enough for those who are not yet ready for platform.  To be ready for platform means you should be able to give at least 6 messages from spirit during a demonstration.  These messages should be full of life after death evidence. If not, then they should not step onto the platform until they are ready. They should go back to the circle and learn how to develop more.  Ask your tutor for guidance.

If a novice is nearly ready for platform work, they should be mentored by an experienced medium, who is willing to take them along to church services and share the platform with them.  This will prepare the novice for working alone and get them up to speed with their message giving. It is grass roots where most of the learning taking place.

I do not answer to, nor apologise to anyone for my beliefs and opinions. I am only concerned with the safety and fairness of those who seek a mediums guidance.  And to those who come to churches looking for help to develop their latent psychic gifts. They should be able to do this in safety and without being ripped off.

Please don’t pay more than you can afford for your reading. Some readers charge far too much for their time. If you cannot afford a private reading then why not try a church open circle. There are lots of them and the Sunday services always have a medium demonstrating too.  That way you just give what you can afford when the collection plate goes around. Everyone benefits this way.

In the past I have referred to rescue mediums.  I thought you might like to know more about this subject.

RESCUE CIRCLES are sometimes formed by Spiritualists in order to help the dead by freeing them from their earthbound state. The idea being that earthbound spirits are unable to go to the light and progress to the spirit world without the help of us mortals.

The souls are understood to be trapped on the material plane. Supposedly, they do not realise they are dead. The sitters in the circle, mediums and their circle members, offer prayers and guide the spirit through the light on their way to a higher existence.

As a medium with many years experience, I have never come across a spirit who has needed my humble help to go to the light, and thus to their intended place in the spirit world. I am not afraid to admit it either.

I know I am not the only medium who feels this way. Surely it is the job of the deceased’s guardian angel, or spirit guide, to guide them back to the home from whence they once came.

Yes, I know that when a person has a violent or tragic passing, they will need time to get used to the fact they have passed. Whereas a person who has been ill for a while will be a little more prepared spiritually. But, that still doesn’t mean that their guide or guardian angel cannot lead them to the light.

I personally, am not so arrogant as to believe I can do what spirits cannot.

Sand reading is another way of giving psychic readings.  It helps the medium to focus without letting their own thoughts connect and get in the way. My students will be learning this tonight at the circle.

The hardest thing for a medium to do, when giving a reading, is to keep their own mind out of the equation. Spirit need a channel through which they can communicate and this channel needs to be clear.  Normally, a persons mind is so busy that it is hard to get through. A medium needs to keep a channel clear for spirit.

We all know that we cannot stop our minds from working. The only way that happens is if we are dead or unconscious. Therefore, we must learn techniques which enable the channel for spirit.

When working with ribbons, stones, and sand, you have a focal point which allows this to happen.  By concentrating on the focal point your mind keeps out of it all. Your mind does not interfere with spirits message.

When reading the sand the students will be able to link in with spirit and whilst they concentrate on what they see in the sand, they may get spirit communication. There will of course be pictures and signs in the sand as well as hand prints to work on. There will also be vibrations.  It will not just be a tray of sand.

Therefore, there are two things working together here.  Psychic ability and mediumship!  Used well together without interference from the human mind, a good message will come across from the spirit world.

I have been asked how long  it takes someone  to come through with communication after they have passed over to spirit. In other words, how soon can a medium link up with them to get proof of survival?

This varies from person to person and spirit to spirit. It all depends how spiritually evolved the person was prior to being born on the earth plane.

The more evolved the spirit, the more likely it is that they will know how to communicate. If they already know how to communicate then it may be very soon after their transition that they are ready to communicate via a medium.

As I have said many times on this page, we all come from the spirit world and we all go back there after ou alloted time is over. What we knew before we arrived here is suppressed from our knowledge so that it does not interfere with our human existence.

When we go back ‘home’, we remember it all and that of course goes with our knowledge of communication.  So if we could communicate with the earth plane then, we will be able to communicate when we get back home.

This does not necessarily mean that you will be able to communicate with the spirit world whilst you are living your earthly life. It may not be within your life’s limit. But you will remember when you are home.

In some cases, where a particular spirit cannot themselves communicate, they will come along with another spirit loved one, who will give the communications. They help each other in the same way a medium helps those who are bereaved here on the earth plane.

Where there is the will there is always the way!  Spirit work hard to bring us proof of survival. We should work hard trying to learn how we can communicate with them. That would be good for us all.

In the meantime, a good medium will help you communicate with Spirit. Enjoy your journey!

You may be wondering what will happen if you decide to have a private reading with a medium.  Here is roughly what you can expect to happen. But, not all readings or readers are the same.

You will probably sit with the medium in a quiet room and the medium. They will  link into the spirit world, and tell you about the communication from your loved ones. Being a medium is like being in the middle of a three way conversation, some of which is in riddles, of sort!

You may find that most mediums like to say a short prayer before asking for help and guidance from the spirit world, and again afterwards, to thank the spirit world for the communication.

The medium should not ask you any questions, other than “Do you understand this?”, “Can you place that?”, or similar phrases. You should not be asked any probing questions. If the medium does begin to question you, rather than giving you proof, I suggest you get up and leave. You could of course use the phrase favoured by many Spiritualists, ‘You tell me, you are the medium!’ That usually has the desired affect.

You should never give out information to someone who is giving you a reading. Nor should you give a reason for having the sitting when ringing up to make an appointment. You don’t even have to give your name, except maybe your first name, out of politeness. The less the medium knows about you the better.  This is not for any reasons of dishonesty, but it is hard to keep what you know out of your mind. A medium likes to keep open the link with spirit and being fed information allows the brain to engage. So, less is more in this instance.

At the sitting, yes and no should be the only words you need to use, apart from the occasional, ‘I don’t know what you mean’. Any genuine medium will certainly not want you to feed them information, as it will get in the way of the incoming message as I have explained.

You should be as open minded as possible, relax and listen to the message.  If afterwards you have questions to ask then it should be alright to do so.  It is of course also OK to fill in the blanks for the medium if you like.  The medium will be happy to accept feedback.
