Mediumship and Beyond

I was asked if trance mediums can channel angry ghosts.

My regular readers will know what I think about most displays of trance.  The upshot about mediumship in general is that the medium should always be in control, not ghosts, not spirits, angry or otherwise.

This boils down to proper development with someone who is really experienced and knows exactly what they are doing.  It is very important to be taught how to open up properly and even more importantly to close down fully.

I cannot emphasise this enough.  Those who think they know better and choose not to bother with the closing down procedure do so at their peril.  Whilst ever you are ‘open’ you can attract spirits and are not in control.

I have been asked this question many times. People are afraid that if they go to a spiritualist medium for a reading they may end up haunted.  They think a ghost  may accompany them to their own home and haunt them there.

Stop worrying now.  This does not happen. I have never known it to happen.  It is the medium who is in contact with the spirit world, not the sitter.  The medium, if they are experienced and know what they are doing, will have said prayers and tuned in to the spirit world in a proper manner and will be sure they are safe.

Like attracts like and a medium working for spirit will be a person who attracts the good spirits. Not ones with haunting in mind.

It boils down to the usual thing really.  Pick a medium who is recommended to you by a friend or loved one.  Someone you are sure is doing it for the right reasons.  Not one that is money orientated. 

Spirits contact a medium via mind to mind.  They do not possess the medium and neither can they possess the sitter.  You will be safe.

Gordon Higginson had his own, very interesting, opinion on the subject of trance mediumship.   He said

…I have said many times and will repeat it: unless the knowledge given in trance is greater than the medium can produce in the normal state, I see no need for trance.

All the great trance mediums I have known have shown this change in personality and character.  A greater knowledge than that of the medium has been demonstrated.

Have you seen any mediums lately that aspire to that challenge. I haven’t!  What point is there in trance if the person purporting to be entranced only gives vague messages,  most of which is just the same as when they are not in trance.  More often it is just the same as their everyday language and thoughts.

I find it hard to take on trust.  So many mediums I have seen use trance,  have done so to persuade people that they have higher knowledge, when they do not.  I have seen so called trance mediums use a pretence of trance to persuade sitters to stand for committee and other such trivia.  Why would a medium need to go into trance for such a message.  Other than to deceive.

I urge you to use your common sense and not to let others insult your intelligence.  In just the same way as not to trust those so called physical mediums who use a blanket of darkness to get out of the chair they were tied to, and play tricks on you. What proof of spirit and life after death.  What is their intention?

In my humble opinion, anything that brings mediumship into disrepute,  should be banned from all Spiritualist churches and circles.  And, so should the so called mediums who cause it!

Firstly I have to be honest and tell you that this is something I do not personally do.  Although I do have experience of sitting with others who were developing it.

It would seem that a lot of these mediums decide to try and develop transfiguration because they have had messages from spirit urging them to do it.  This has sometimes come through other mediums and sometimes through meditation. For whatever reason, they are inspired to do it.

The developing medium usually sits in a private circle of trusted friends of whom most will be mediums.  Not all will have prior knowledge of transfiguraion but they will know the importance of dedication.

As with all spiritual development, dedication is a prerequisite.  You must be able to sit on a regular basis and at a regular time. You are making appointments with your spirit guides and guardian angels and must respect them as they do you.

The circle will always begin with a few preparations.  Usually there is only a small light  in the room. This has often been red in the past but I know other colour is used now.  Mostly the room is very dim but modern day beliefs say it does not have to be pitch black.

The circle opens with prayer and there follows meditation by all.  Sometimes one of the sitters may bring communication from the guides to aide the mediums development.

After a while all eyes will be on the developing medium, to watch for signs of face changes.  This is how transfiguration begins.  You may see subtle changes in the face at first but it may take quite a few sitting to get real progress.  You may feel nothing is happening but the guides will be working on the medium.

The theory behind transfiguration is that spirit build up ectoplasm, which is then used as a mask by the communicating spirit.  The mask is moulded over the mediums face in such a way as to resemble to communicating spirit.  Therefore, you may see a loved ones face superimposed over the medium.

This does not happen over night and that is why I say that dedication is paramount.  As with all physical mediumship.  If it is a gift worth having it is worth working for and waiting for.  Just like the gift of any mediumship.

Being a medium is a big  responsibility.  You have a responsibility to spirit and to the people you read for.  There are ethics attached to this work and it must not be undertaken lightly.

When a medium is going to work with spirit there are a few things they have to remember. Some of these were mentioned in yesterday’s post about evil or bad spirits.  Saying a prayer and opening up and closing down are tacit requirements.

Here I want to talk about the ethics involved.  I have witnessed psychics telling people some very bizarre stuff.  They throw a lot of so called fortune telling and predictions in it.  This can only cause pain in the long term.  No one knows what tomorrows may bring, not even a medium and spirit cannot tell us.

The medium has to be so careful how the spirits message is put across.  It can mean the difference between reassurance and upset.  When the medium is picking up the communication from spirit,  they have to be aware of the words they use to put it over to the listener.  It must be remembered that spirit only come to communicate to uplift and bring love.   To prove life after death.  Not to upset and bring sorrow.

Fortunately spirits do not ever come through to forecast death. They cannot do that.   Neither do they come through to bring bad news.  It is not in their remit.

If you, medium, psychic, and seeker alike, remember  these facts then you will not go far wrong.

This is my own opinion about bad spirits and good spirits.

Is there a danger of contacting evil spirits whilst working mediumistically?  There is only danger when the medium is not experienced and is not in control. The medium must be in control at all times.  Nothing should take place that the medium is not happy with.

To work with spirits you have to develop your psychic abilities to the highest degree.  You have to ask for the highest and the truth at all times.  And, above all,  you have to work with spirit for the highest of reasons.

The highest reason is to help others.  You help them by giving them proof of life after death, which you get from the spirit world.  You have to treat spirit with the greatest of respect.  It is not a game.  It is not entertainment.  It is serious work.  That is not to say that you cannot be light hearted whilst giving the communication.  You want to uplift not bring down.  But do not belittle the spirits who come through.

By the same token, if a spirit was to get through and it was not nice in any way, then you must close down.  Once you let a naughty spirit mess you about you are no longer in control and others may get through too.

If you are tuning in to spirit for a sincere reason, and you say an opening prayer asking for spirits love and protection, then you will be fine.  Opening up your psychic centres will allow spirit to come through.  Therefore, you must close them down again when you are finished with the communication.  This is ALWAYS important. However devloped and experienced you are you still need the safety of closing down.

There are of course good and bad everywhere. Bad people die just as the good ones do.  Make sure you are always in control and only accept what is good.  You will never come to harm if you follow the rules.

I have been working for spirit over 30years now and have never had a bad spirit come through.  Of course, not all spirits were perfect people on this earth plane.  Of course they will still show you their personality when they come through. This is to prove who they are.

Evil is another thing altogether.  Evil attracts evil and if you are a good person then you will not attract  evil.

One of the best ways of improving and developing mediumship is to sit in a private circle.  As opposed to sitting in a church open circle.  Or any open circle for that matter.

The open circles are a great place to practice using your mediumship though when you are ready for it.

A private circle occurs when a group of friends, who are mediums and developing mediums, get together, usually in one of their homes, to develop together.

It can be in the church, and this usually means the group have to be church members.  But, I feel it is more relaxed if it is held in a private home.

Usually, once a week is enough but it can be held more often.  Usually after a long spell of working together you may find there is a need for extra sitting.  This is probably to help the development of a particular person or particular gift.

Once per week, at the same time each week, you will all meet up and go through the same opening procedure.  It has to be a regular set of circumstances. Spirit like you to stick to set rules which you all agree to.  You are making an appointment to work with spirit so you do need rules.

You should always close the circle down in the same manner too.  You should say a closing prayer and thank spirit for being there and helping you to develop.  You should thank each other for helping too.  It is team work.

You can decide how you want the actual circle to work and what you might want from it.  You may want to just develop your psychic gifts so that you may give life after death proof.  You may at a later stage decide to develop trance or another gift.  It is up to the spirits and the circle.   You don’t all have to develop the same gift.
