If you decide to go and see a medium for a private reading, it is always best to ask around and see if any friends or relatives can recommend someone they have been to see.
Word of mouth is usually how a mediums reputation is measured. If someone has had a really good sitting with genuine proof of life after death, they will be pleased to pass on a name and number to you. Equally, if your friends have been to see a medium who left a lot to be desired, they will want to warn you against seeing them and perhaps wasting your hard earned cash.
First and foremost, a good reading with a medium should contain information about a loved one of yours in the spirit world.
This information should be enough for you to recognise who it is communicating to you, by stating personal details such as their name, illness with which they passed over or suffered from, and places and memories that are collectively unique to you and them and your relationship with them. You may not receive all of the above, but there should be enough data for you to recognise who the loved one is.
Secondly, after the loved one has proved to you who they are, they should be able to pass on information to you, via the medium, about current events concerning yourself and about any concerns you have in your current life.
The spirit may give advice about how to handle a particular difficulty you are experiencing, or matters to do with another loved one, on this earth plane, who may be unwell and in need of healing, or having problems of their own.
Remember, your loved ones like to carry on helping us from the spirit world, just as they did when they were here on Earth. They will offer advice and generally, if their advice was good when they were here in the material world, then they should still be able to offer good advice from the spirit world.
Sometimes, if you are lucky, the communicator may tell you something that you are not yet aware of, and it may only become clear what they mean, when you have asked questions of those within your family or friends.
This would be proof that there can be no mind reading going on, as it needs the input of an absent third party to fill in the gaps of the message. I like it when this happens. What better proof that the spirit lives on after the earthly existence is over.

We have the proof, or at least strong evidence, of life after death from Near Death Experiences.

I think afterlife communications are very interesting but if we are going to get science and everyone else on board, it will probably be the proof from Near Death Experiences.

Interesting article. Would just like to say that being told “something you are not yet aware of” can be a parlour trick, if it is vague enough. It’s a bit like the nostradamus effect: there’s a verse, or something said, and eventually you will find something it seems to apply to, then you’ve “found” the thing.
It could be particularly effective because the person who had the reading is then looking out for something which matches what they were told.

May I say that I take your point, but I may have mislead you inadvertantly. I will try to explain what my intention was in saying ‘Something that you are not yet aware of’.
When I personally give a private reading it usually consists of:
a) information about a loved one of yours in the spirit world
b) after the loved one has proved to you who they are, they will pass on information to you, via myself, about current events concerning yourself and about any concerns you have in your current life.
c) after the loved one has proved to you who they are, they should be will pass on information to you about current events concerning yourself, and about any concerns you have in your current life
To explain c) here is an example.
I say, Your loved one is talking about the broken lock on your front door.
The sitter may say they don’t know about it and the lock is perfect.
I will say please remember spirit mentioned it
Sometime later the lock on the front door WILL be broken and that person will remember spirit knew about it.
This I see as more proof that there is existence of the spirit even after death and they know more than we do.
When I say ‘something’ I actually mean something specific.
