Mediumship and the Law,  or Laws placed upon Our Religion!

This is guidance for mediums who work with the public either in church or in private.  Mediumship is now complicated with laws that are nothing to do with religion.  This would not happen to any other religion in England or Britain, or to any UK or English church.  Would any other religion stand for it?

The old Fraudulent Mediums legislation is no longer in force. Within UK law, mediumship is now regulated under consumer protection law which protects people who pay to receive mediumship services. If payment is required then it should be clear what is being paid for and people must not be harmed by what they experience.

Events held in Spiritualist churches where the general public are asked to pay an entrance fee, even though these may be a normal part of a churches’ programme of religious activities, are likely to be subject to the provisions of consumer protection law. As such we must ensure that the public is not misled into making payment to attend church events and that vulnerable people are protected.

If a member of the public were to attend an event, not knowing what happens, he might find the experience satisfying, disappointing or disturbing. If disturbed, taking this to its extreme, he might claim to have been psychologically damaged, he might consider a claim for damages! Therefore, to explain events and to warn vulnerable people, the SNU has issued guidelines and produced disclaimer notices.”

In my humble opinion, people who are bereaved, are looking for proof of life after death and often turn to Spiritualism for comfort and answers, where other religions may leave them wanting.

Trading Standards have little to do with this sort of spiritual work and they do not, nor can they be expected, to understand it.  It is a case of horses for courses, and the majority of excellent mediums are now penalised by the unscrupulous people who pretend to be one of us.

In answer to your many queries, here is some information about the SNU (The Spiritualists’ National Union).

The SNU is a not for profit, limited company having charitable status with a goal to do all it can for the advancement of Spiritualism.

The SNU supports and has helped to unify almost 340 Spiritualist churches and centres throughout the United Kingdom. There are 2,400 individual Spiritualists who pay an annual fee for formal membership of the company. and within SNU churches and centres there are 17,500 people who pay an annual subscription for membership.

Weekly we estimated that 40,000 members of the public attend SNU Spiritualist religious services, spirit-medium demonstrations or spiritual healing sessions.

The SNU owns a large residential college, grounds and other building located near Stansted airport. The college is called Stansted Hall. Courses are run throughout the year and are very popular. Booking early is required for the most popular courses. See their web site for course details and costs. Throughout the United Kingdom the SNU supports the training of spiritual healers, spirit mediums, public speakers and teachers.

The company is directed by the National Executive Committee (NEC). Reporting to the NEC are Standing Committees, sub-committees, an advisory national Council, 14 regional Committees, the Lyceum Union, and SNU international.

The Spiritualist movement has no dogma or creed but abides by a set of seven principals.

1. The Fatherhood of God.

2. The Brotherhood of Man.

3. The Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels.

4. The continuous existence of the human soul.

5. Personal responsibility.

6. Compensation & retribution hereafter for all the good & evil deeds done on earth.

7. Eternal progress open to every human soul.

I was really disappointed last night with the Ghost Whisperer.  As my regular readers will know, up until now I have been a fan of the programme.

Last nights episode went into the realms of science fiction and focused mainly on a ghost and Melinda actually inside a computer video game!

Whilst some of you may find it difficult to believe some of the goings on with ghosts and Melinda in the usual episodes, this I feel went too far off course.

I assume that they may have new writers ,who are more into the realms of science fiction and the likes of Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  What a pity!

I knew there was going to be controversy but I did not expect it to go so far into science fiction so soon into the new series.  If it continues in this vain it will loose a lot of its fans, including myself.

Yes, I know it is a ficticious series, but I thought that because they have a real medium on their production team, that it would remain fairly believable by those of us with an interest in the subject.

You cannot win them all!  Back to my real subjects tomorrow.

The new series of the Ghost Whisperer has begun on Living , Sky TV’s popular channel. For those of you who are not familiar with this programme, here is a little info for you.  It is screened at 9pm tonight.

Newlywed Melinda Gordon tries to help the dead communicate with loved ones, ‘but sometimes the messages she receives are confusing.’ Most of  Melinda’s  efforts involve resolving conflicts that are preventing the spirits from passing over. Once she has helped them they move into the light.

This popular sentimental drama is ‘inspired by medium James Van Praagh.’

The Cast: Jennifer Love Hewitt: Melinda Gordon
               David Conrad: Jim Clancy
               Camryn Manheim: Delia Banks
               Christoph Sanders: Ned Banks
               Aisha Tyler: Andrea Moreno
               Jamie Kennedy: Eli James

I have enjoyed the first three series.  The new series 4 has begun and it promises to be very controversial.  There are big upsets in store for all the devoted fans of the series.  Some of it will be hard to take and some of it will make the regular viewers of the Ghost Whisperer very unhappy, not to mention frustrated.

What interests me in this new series, is the inclusion of the latest recruit, who happens to be a clairaudient medium. It makes it a little more interesting to have someone who just ‘hears’ the ghosts, rather than see them like Melinda does.  He and Melinda work well together to help those ghosts pass through the light and on to their spirit home, where they belong.

Some of the story lines are quite inspired and I can see where the writers are coming from.  The latest series though, makes the imagination stretch perhaps a little too far.  Let me know your thoughts.

‘Life After Life’ is a book by Raymond A Moody.  Dr Raymond Moody is a renowned psychiatrist and researcher, who is also a leading authority on near death experiences.  Dr Moody runs a research institute called The Theatre of the Mind in the USA.

This book first appeared in 1975 but has been revised and is available still in an anniversary edition.

I have long been interested in life after death, or near death, experiences.  For me it is these types of experience which help us to realise that there is more to us than this earthly existence.  Out of body experiences at the time of near death also give us an insight into what it might be like at the time of death.

This book quotes the experiences of lots of Americans at the time of their cardiac arrest, and other possible major life ending traumas.  There is a wide age range and people from all walks of life talk about their experience and emotional upheaval.

The most common thing to be mentioned is a ‘golden light’ (some say ‘white light’) appearing up high in the corner of the room.  This light making the person feel warm, peaceful and safe.  The light is often referred to as God or Lord.  There is a ‘knowing’ of words of comfort rather than a hearing.  It is towards this light that a person gravitates.

I personally understand the ‘knowing’ of words, as this happens when I am working mediumistically.  I am not though a person who has ever had these experiences.  My hubby suffered three cardiac arrests at the time of his heart attack, from which he recovered.  He is adamant that he had none of this type of experience.

Thousands have a near death without recalling any of these sorts of events, but thousands do recall events.  There are those who can induce out of body experiences without there being any trauma.  Many in this book have the events whilst on the operating table.

The book is very easy to read and to understand and I thoroughly recommend it to all with an interest in the beyond.  Good reading!

When you begin having your home circle seances, there are things you will wonder about.  Are there rules to follow etc  Here are a few important things.

It is no use asking for or expecting famous people such as Elvis Presley, Curt Cobain, Princess Diana and John Lennon to visit your circle.  It is not entirely impossible in the realms of spirit, but you cannot ask for or demand visitations by any particular spirit, even your own loved ones.  You get what comes to you, in honesty.

The reason I always suggest you open up yourself and your circles, with a prayer, is that you are then protected by spirit.  Remember, there are good people in the spirit world,  but also not so good ones.  We all have to move over after our material death.  What ever level of spirit plane you go to is either reward or retribution for good and bad deeds done on earth.

You need to be sure that you only get the ‘good spirits’  coming through to your seance.  A prayer asking for the highest and the truth, will suffice here, as well as asking spirit to surround you with love.  Offering your love to the spirit world is good too as well as being humble and practicing humility.

Whilst in meditation you will have been visited by spirit.  Some of your sitters will have things to say and some will have messages to give.  I suggest you do this in turn with only one speaker at any given time.  If there is advice from spirit, now is the time it may come through.

You must all close down properly at the end of your circle, preferably before your closing prayer.  Your prayer should thank spirit for working with you.  You may also want to ask that any energy left in the circle may go out and be used as healing, where it is most needed.

I wish you well with your circles and seances and look forward to answering your queries as ever.  God Bless!

There are a few things you need to be aware of if you set out to work on the spiritual pathway. Here are a few I think it important to impart.

The Ego
The ego is something that should be left behind whilst working with spirit. All too often, a big ego spoils what was potentially a great gift. It can soon become ‘Aren’t I good?’ and sadly, all mention of not being able to give messages without spirit’s help, can be forgotten.

It is easy to become self-obsessed when sitters are singing your praises, but you should never forget where the communication actually comes from. To be humble, compassionate and caring, is far better than being egotistical. Your development will fare better for it.

One’s Own Mind
It can be very hard at first to differentiate between the thoughts in your head and the messages being put into your mind by spirits. You will soon be able to figure it out. You will know when it is something that you have put into your mind and not spirit. To make sure and to reassure yourself, ask for a sign from your guide. This can be a signal that you will always recognise as being them. It can be a touch of the head or face, a particular sensation, or something else. You can decide what it is to be, then you can ask your guide or Guardian Angel to repeat the signal every time you ask.

If in doubt, you can use my method: say to spirit that you have understood the message, but need to know if it is really from spirit, and not from your own mind. Wait for the signal before carrying on. If you do not get the correct signal, do not give the communication.

Not Everything in Your Head is a Message
It is dangerous to start to believe that everything going through your mind is a message from the spirit world. It is not spirit if it is something you have been thinking of, it is probably just your own mind. If you have tuned in to spirit whilst opening up your psychic centres and asked for communication, then it may be a message. “Test all things”, should be your motto. You are seeking the truth, so you do not want to be deluded.

Some novices, assume that everything going through their mind is a spiritual message, it is not. It would be mind boggling if it were. You would have trouble sorting it all out. Also, it would interfere with your material life, and it is for this purpose (living a material life) that we are here on the earth plane, to live our life and learn our lessons.

Prove all things, and, as the saying goes, “Test ye the Spirit.” Take nothing for granted and always work with humility.  I leave you in the safe hands of your Spirit Guide.  May you spend many happy and wonderful hours communicating with them and proving life after death to seekers of truth.

There is a type of phenomena which involves table tapping, or tilting, as it is sometimes called. This is regarded as a lower form of phenomena. Psychic energy is built up by sitters around a table, rather than by spirits. The sitters put their fingertips lightly onto the table and the person chosen as spokesperson leads the event.

It usually begins with a prayer to the spirits asking for their communication and the leader may probably ask ‘Is there anybody there?’ Yes, that question is really asked!  After a short wait the table may begin to stir (it does not always work). It may be only a little shudder at first but soon builds to definite movements.

The table may rock back and forth or tilt from one side to the other. All the time, the sitters keep their fingertips on the edge of it, being careful not to press hard or attempt to move it themselves. A certain amount of trust is needed between sitters and it is therefore best to sit with a group you know well.

Eventually the leader will ask which side will the table tilt for yes and which side for no. Once this is firmly established, questions can be asked. Are you there? Have you come to see some one in particular? Do you want to give them a message? And so forth. If the answer to the last question is yes then a form of code is used by the table energy, to tap out a message for the loved one.

It can be very laborious as it is usually one tap for A, two taps for B, and so on, through the whole alphabet. Tapping out the word ‘Zoo’ can take some time! This however, is how it works and the message is intended as information for a loved one, or even guidance on how to run their private circle. This could be advice about who should sit in the group on a regular basis and who might spoil the circle’s balance.

I have lots of doubts about the use of table phenomena. I have though, through personal experiment, realised that words tapped out by the table can be pre-empted  starts to tap out a word and gets as far as: Jo, and a sitter asks if it is John, the answer will almost always be yes, when in actual fact if the table had been left to tap out the full word it may well have been something entirely different.

I have also witnessed the table spelling out words that some sitters were willing it to spell. Sitters asked questions and as the table started to tap out words, the selected sitters would use their will to spell their own answers. My personal view is that this is neither the best, nor the most useful way to receive guidance from the spirit world. I have though been witness to some great table phenomena and suggest you try it out for yourself at some stage. It may work for, it may not.

A couple at one of the local Spiritualist churches invited a group of us to witness their table phenomena. We were very excited and could hardly wait for the evening to come. The couple, we’ll call them Pat and Alan, had been developing their gift for a long time and were getting very good results. They felt it was now time to share their gift among other spiritualists. Note: some spiritualists are very possessive about their gifts and most do not like to share their phenomena.

There were quite a few of us, at this particular event, about a dozen as I recall. The table was large and heavy. Pat and Alan sat at one side together and we visitors filled up the chairs around the rest of the table. Others had to wait their turn seated on chairs placed around the sides of the room. The sitters were asked to put their fingertips lightly onto the table and to try to keep our little fingers touching our neighbours fingers. We all did as requested and eagerly awaited events.

The lights were turned out but you could still see each other in the gloom. A prayer was said and protection was requested. The table began to rumble and slowly it started to lift off the floor. It swayed from side to side and we had trouble keeping our fingers on it as it began to move so quickly.  At one particular moment, the table rose so high that it was almost touching the light fitting in the ceiling. One sitter remarked later, that he tried very hard to pull down the table so as to prove nothing was holding it up.

I am only short in stature and found it increasingly difficult to hold on. The table then settled down to tapping out messages. Several sitters received messages from loved ones via the table and all said the information was unknown to anyone else but themselves.

The spirit guide who was in control of the table was a Native American Indian, Red Cloud, who had been known to them for several years. The guide decided at the end of the sitting to do a tribal dance with the table. This was an experience I have always treasured.

Pat And Alan were physical mediums and were able to bring spirit through to use the table in this manner. They did not just rely on the psychic energy from the sitters. There are not many mediums around today who are gifted in this way. It is all down to dedication and very regular practice.

Sadly, both Pat and Alan are now in the spirit world themselves and are no longer able to help from this side of life. I know they helped many here on the earth plane, and are still I am sure, keeping up the good work on the higher side of life.

I hope some day you too are able to experience this type of phenomena.

On frequenting Spiritualist churches, you may be forgiven for thinking that all guides are Native Americans, or monks and nuns or Sisters of Mercy.   You may find yourself asking why the American Indians White Feather and Red Cloud can possibly be the guides of so many mediums at the same time, and why even Sitting Bull is appearing at lots of circles simultaneously.

Whilst some of these very spiritual beings may often be present at such events, there is, occasionally, a deluded person who makes the claim of having such venerable guides, because they think it  will impress others.

It is of course possible, that the person is aware of such a similar spirit and thinks that it will be  good to put a name to them, therefore making them misguided rather than deluded. Queen Victoria and Cleopatra are others whose names are bandied around, most often without any proof at all.

You must learn to seek proof in all things and take nothing at face value.  Use your own intelligence to figure it out.

It makes obvious sense that spiritual souls will want to come and help us with our  spiritual growth, but those souls who led ordinary everyday lives, can and do make very good helpers and guides.

Whatever we need to learn at certain times during our development and eternal progression, a particular guide will come, with the knowledge we are needing. They will help us all they can to progress.

It may be a spirit who was a road sweeper, nun, typist, actor or musician in this earthly life.  Whichever earthly body or life they inhabited you should welcome them, as they have only our well being in mind.  They will teach us so much about spirituality as well as about everyday life.

Some will bring humour and some serenity.  Some will bring prayer and devotion. Whatever is necessary for us to have guidance with at that particular time in our life. Spirit know what it is we need guidance with and we are humbled when they come to call.

Enjoy the experience and cherish their devotion to you.

Psychometry, colour and vibrations are all used by psychics and mediums in their day to day work.  Some use Tarot cards and Crystal Balls.  There are also sand readers and flower readers.

Psychic readers need lots of help as they cannot communicate with spirit.  They have to glean as much information as possible by reading the vibes from objects and cards etc.  Even when using a crystal ball, it is used as a focal point.  There are no pictures which appear inside the ball, it only appears that way to the psychic who is using it as a focal point, something to concentrate on whilst they pick up the information needed to give a message.

There is nothing wrong with being a psychic and some work extremely well.  They are not all cold readers.  Cold readers could not match a good psychic.  Lots of psychics are more than happy with the amount of information they get and give.  Those who are very good at working psychically can usually develop into a good medium if they want to dedicate the time and energy needed to do so.

There is a lot of hard work to put into developing mediumship.  You have to be dedicated and willing to forgo other things in order to concentrate yourself on the spiritual aspect of mediumship.

Unlike psychics, meditation and prayer are important for mediums.  It is important to learn to raise your consciousness to a higher level.  It is also very important to get to know your spiritual guide, or guardian angel.  For this you need meditation.

Some psychics think you do not need to meditate in order to learn to give messages.  They are right, you don’t.  But, if you wish to become a good medium and learn to give proof of life after this life, then meditation is very important for you.

It is during meditation that your guides and helpers will come close and help to teach you in their ways of communication.  The guides will find out how to get their message across to you and how to make you feel their presence.

You, as a person, will soon notice the difference in the quality of your communications.  Your messages will become much clearer and have new meaning.  You will feel differently about the whole readings you give.  You will become much more discerning about the things you accept.

It is all worth it in the end.  After all, the purpose of a medium is to prove that there is life after death.  It is not to give fortune telling and information about bills and shopping.  Leave that to the psychics.  If you only prove life after death to one person per church service, then it is all worth while.
